VOLUNTEER TREE PLANTING AT CHESLEN PRESERVE

Calling all volunteers to get involved in a mega tree planting party!  Natural Lands Trust is planting 600 trees this fall at our 1,263-acre ChesLen Preserve, in an all-volunteer effort generously supported by TreeVitalize.

Large-scale tree planting is part of an important reforestation project in the southwest area of the preserve. Planting native trees is one of the best ways to support wildlife as well as minimize erosion, purify air, filter nutrients, capture stormwater runoff, and provide great spaces for people to enjoy! Natural Lands Trust is hosting a tree-planting party to plant 600 native tree saplings, including oak, maple, birch, and other species.

Volunteers meet and park along Kelsall Road, between Route 162 and Cannery Road – NOT at the Lenfest Center.  This GPS address will get you close: 1251 Kelsall Road, Coatesville, PA. RECYCLING: THE PHILLY MOB GETS INTO THE ACT

Runoff from the Jersey Recycling Services
landfill purportedly reaching Pennsauken Creek.
Apparently, the Philly Mob has gotten with the times and has gone “green” – as in recycling.

The Philly Voice reports that Bard Sirkin, a Florida-based businessman with ties to Philadelphia mob boss Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino and the Lucchese and Bonanno crime families in New York, operated Jersey Recycling Services, a company that leased a 104-acre dumping site in Palmyra NJ.

Authorities claim he used the recycling and mulching operation as a front for an illegal landfill that took potentially hazardous waste materials, construction debris and dangerous pollutants.

To add insult to injury, the potential cleanup costs for the now abandoned site to the borough of Palmyra could top $10M, said a representative of the New Jersey State Commission of Investigation (SCI). And it's also unknown if any contaminants had leeched into the nearby Pennsauken Creek, the Delaware River or the 250-acre Palmyra Cove Nature Park adjacent to the dumping site.

HELP JUDY WICKS SOLARIZE CENTER CITY!

This fall, Judy Wicks (founder of the White Dog Restaurant, The Sustainable Business Network and BALLE) is partnering with the Center City Residents Association, the Clean Air Council, and Solar States, a local solar installer, to launch a Solarize Center City campaign in which residents  of West Center City can use their collective buying power to purchase solar systems for their properties at greatly reduced costs.

She says, "Early this year, Solar States installed solar panels on my roof and I am very happy with the quality of their work and the tremendous savings I’ve seen. Importantly, displacing fossil fuel-produced energy with renewable energy curbs climate change and improves air quality, reducing asthma and other illnesses caused by pollution. Rooftop solar provides significant savings to homeowners, while contracting with locally-based Solar States creates green jobs and supports our local economy."

When neighbors solarize together, Solar States can offer large discounts – the more neighbors the greater the discount. Solarize campaigns have the potential to reduce the cost of a home solar system by 15% , and combined with the federal tax credit of 30% produces savings of 45%, and that’s just the beginning - savings from greatly reduced electric bills will continue over the years.

DATE: Campaign Kickoff: Wednesday, October 5, 5:30 – 7:30 pm | 5:30 Wine & Cheese Reception; 6pm program
LOCATION: Trinity Center for Urban Life, 22nd & Spruce Streets
